If you can’t cancel your ABN online
- Call the Australian Business Register on 13 92 26 between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday. You must be recorded as authorised to update ABN details for your business.
- Lodge an Application to Cancel Registration form.
- Ask your registered tax agent or BAS agent to cancel your ABN.
Can I cancel my ABN and get a new one?
If your business structure changes you may need to cancel your ABN and apply for a new one.
Why is ABN unsuccessful?
If your ABN application is rejected, it simply means that either some important information is missing or incorrect and the ATO is giving you a chance to fix it up before proceeding.
Can I get my ABN back?
Within 24 hours your ABN will be reactivated. Alternatively, you can re-apply through the ABR website. Their system will then search for your previous ABN. Once authorised, your ABN status should update to ‘Active’ upon lookup.
How long does an ABN stay active?
As a business owner, you will have to register for one online if you haven’t already since it would not be automatically issued to you. After you register for an ABN, make sure you store a record or a copy of it. Your ABN will sticks with you for life.
What does it mean when an ABN is Cancelled?
If your ABN is cancelled, you have no legal business. Which means you are operating illegally. Would you do business with an illegal business and not being able to claim it as a legitimate tax deduction? You would not, so your customers wouldn’t either.
Can I use an old ABN for a new business?
You can conduct any number of businesses/activities under the same ABN provided they all operate under the same business structure. If your second or subsequent business operates under a different structure, you need to apply for separate ABNs for each new business structure.

Does an ABN expire if not used?
Unused ABNs could be cancelled by the ABR and might not show up on the lookup. If that’s the case, you can re-submit an online application to reactivate your ABN. Once that’s done, your ABN will be shown as active on the ABN lookup.
